This little list is from the cupcake classes I teach at Butter Lane. I believe that there are a many things that discourage people from cooking and baking at home with two of the bigger ones being (i) their results are not consistent and (ii) they make a huge mess. These tips can help with both of those problems. I like to remind my students that I’ve had the luxury of making some recipes hundreds and even thousands of times and hope they can benefit from some of the tiny little details I’ve learned along the way.
As a college student, I definitely think the problem of results and MESSINESS is a huge issue and leads to the whole “cooking is too much work” mentality. However, college kids with this attitude should definitely take a look at these tips! They work! I promise! I have lived in dorms/tiny shoebox and nothing has exploded yet.
#4 is my favorite:
“4. Add Gradually
Add ingredients bit by bit, mixing between each addition, rather than dumping everything together then attempting to mix a mountain of ingredients. For instance, when making the batter, add one egg at a time, mixing briefly in between each addition.”
This tip is ESSENTIAL to perfecting cupcake recipes and NOT making a mess! I am a cupcake fiend and am currently working on coming up with a delicious red velvet cupcake recipe with a feminist icing twist. Details to come!
Enjoy and happy baking!
